Raspberry Pi Model A (RS Components)

Raspberry Pi Model A

256 MB RAM, 1 USB Port

The Raspberry Pi (short: RPi or RasPi) is an ultra-low-cost credit-card sized computer board which was conceived with the primary goal of teaching computer programming to children. It's also a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets and word-processing, it even plays high-definition video. Or you can use it as a small server for applications like Links opens in new window/tabmpd or Links opens in new window/tabownCloud. Or as a gaming or emulation system (for example built into a C64 case with the Keyrah interface). Or something entirely different, it's up to you. :-)

The system must be booted from an SD card (Links opens in new window/tabsuitable card images are freely available), other mass storage devices can be connected via USB.

Raspberry Pi Model A (element14)

Model A Features:

  • SoC: Broadcom BCM2835 (CPU, GPU and SDRAM)
  • CPU: 700 MHz ARM1176JZF-S core (ARM11 family)
  • GPU: Broadcom VideoCore IV, OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG 1080p30 H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High-Profile decoder
  • Memory (SDRAM): 256 Megabytes (MiB)
  • Video output: Composite RCA, HDMI
  • Audio output: 3.5 mm, HDMI
  • Mass storage: SD/MMC slot
  • USB: one USB2.0 ports
  • Power supply: 5V via microUSB
  • Dimensions: 85.6 mm x 53.98 mm

Model A Notes:

The Model A of the Raspberry Pi is a stripped-down version of the Model B, there is no Ethernet, only one USB port and half the memory (256 MB instead of 512 MB). What sounds like a disadvantage, does not necessarily have to be one. The missing features do not only lower the price, they also lower the board's power consumption: The Model A only needs about two thirds of the power the Model B draws, so it's the perfect base for projects that need to be powered by batteries or solar cells.

New Out Of Box Software: NOOBS

We no longer offer cards with Raspbian or XBMC or RiscOS, since they are now all included in the marvellous new software package Links opens in new window/tabNOOBS. NOOBS currently features the following operating systems:
  • Raspbian
  • RaspBMC
  • OpenELEC (XBMC)
  • Archlinux
  • Pidora
  • RiscOS
Raspbian is already present on the card (vanilla version and a version that boots directly into Scratch), the other operating systems must be loaded from the internet.

You simply select one of these operating systems for installation, and it will be booted on the next start. The operating system can be changed any time later, just hold the Shift key while booting. If you'd like to order a card pre-installed with NOOBS, please select it in the configuration menu.

Raspberry Pi and the Raspberry Pi logo are trademarks of the Links opens in new window/tabRaspberry Pi Foundation.
